Integrating Math, Culture, Economics and Language Arts in First Grade

First grade students are making baby dolls that are the same length and weight as they were when they were born! This multidisciplinary project allows us to get to know and appreciate one another’s cultures, families and backgrounds. For math, it gives us a personal connection to the study of measurement and comparing measurements. In Social Studies, we will be using the baby’s wants and needs to study economics. We will be synthesizing all this information in our writing of baby books, which coincides with our non-fiction writing unit.

Free National Parks Pass for Fourth Graders

Exploring our amazing parks can teach us so much about the world and helps us appreciate the environment. Fourth graders and their families can get a free pass to US National Parks by following this link.

A Blow-dryer in Design Lab?

Outside my office I heard a blow-dryer and cheering and had to check it out. Students in Kindergarten have been learning about weather in their classrooms.  They learned about anemometers, a weather tool that measures the speed of wind, and today they got to test out their models. See Ms. Bruch’s Design Lab Blog for more details and pictures. http://room108da.edublogs.org/

Invention Convention Club

The club met last week to share design changes they found that made products better. Students are looking for design problems in their world so they can start inventing a solution. For a team building activity, we had a design challenge to build the tallest index card towers that could hold a water bottle. See everyone on the 26th (no meeting this week)

Invention Convention Club

We had a great start to the 4th and 5th grade Invention Convention Club. The students created hover crafts and made design revisions to perfect their inventions. We discussed friction, force, speed and velocity.  Their homework is to find for design problems in their world and identify improvements or adaptations that design engineers have made. The Discovery Academy 2nd and 3rd grade have started the invention convention in Design Lab. Dates to keep in mind:

March 23rd – Discovery Invention Convention
April 8th – Regional Competition Goodwin College
April 29th – CT Invention Convention Finals at the University of Connecticut
