Mission:
Learn about Flags and there importance in the world. Then, use this knowledge to become an expert flag designer.
Your job:
Phase 1: What makes a great flag….
- With you teachers or parents watch the following TED Talk on Flags: “Roman Mars: Why City Flags may be the worst designed thing you’ve never noticed.”
(You may want to watch it more than once. Be sure to take notes)
- Answer the following questions about the talk
- What makes a good flag?
- What makes a bad flag?
- What are some examples of great flags shared in the talk?
- What are some tips for working to design a great flag?
- Why do flags matter?
Phase 2: Flags near you
Using the internet evaluate the following flags.
- The flag of the United States of America
- The Connecticut State Flag
- The City of Hartford Flag
- The flag of your home town
- The flag of the town your school is in
On a separate piece of paper post a picture of each of these flags and write a little about how successful they are at being flags. Do they meet the criteria of a good flag discussed in the TED Talk?
Phase 3: Be a flag designer
Pick one flag near you, either your state flag or a local flag and redesign it.
