Out of the Race, by Namyanzi, April 2, 2018
On March 30, 2018, Team Vestas had lost their mast and are postponed until further notice to rejoin the race with a fixed mast. The mast broke and flew away into the Pacific in the vicious winds and waves. This is devastating news as they wonder what the results are going to be. If they’re able to get a new mast and sail again everything may be alright, however, I believe that we probably will come in last it will be worth it to finish the race in one piece.

During this leg of the race, the Vestas Team stopped in New Zealand and gave a $10,000 grant to the Orca Research Trust. They also plan to do something environmentally friendly to help marine life and ocean health at each of their 12 stops. They like to recycle, reduce and reuse and do a lot of work towards sustainability. When they get to Rhode Island they will plant seagrass and mangroves to balance out the carbon footprint that the race caused.
