Adopt a Country

Venezuela Project Grace and Julia

Mission:

On this mission you will learn about a new country and culture and share those learnings with your friends and family.

Your job:

Phase 1: Choose a Country and Begin to Learn

In 2017 there are 195 countries in the world.  Some of these nations are big nations we hear about a lot and some are tiny countries that you may never hear about.  Each country is unique and has a story and culture to share.

Study a map or globe in your classroom.

  • Can you find your country?
  • What other countries do you see that are familiar to you?
  • Have you visited any other countries? If yes, try to find them on the map.
  • Is your family originally from another country or countries? If yes, try to find them on the map.

Choose a country that you have never been to as your project country.

  1. What country did you choose?
  2. What do you know about it now?
  3. Why did you choose it?

 Phase 2: Begin Your Research

Using the internet and books from the library what can you learn about this country?

  1. What language do they speak?
  2. What other countries are near?
  3. What religions do the people there practice?
  4. What are some holidays?
  5. What kind of government do they have? Who is their president?
  6. Does the country have a lot of money or a little?
  7. Can you see any interesting current events about your country, how do these make you feel?
  8. What businesses do they have there?
  9. What is the natural landscape like?
  10. What kind of food do they eat?
  11. What does their flag look like

Phase 3: Mapping it Out

Take some time to learn about the geography of your chosen country and then make your own map of the nation.  Are there any famous spots you want to be sure to include?

Share the map with others. Don’t forget to use details, and labels, and color.

Phase 4: History Comes Alive

Research the history of your country and build a power point presentation that shares the history.  Try to use pictures to help tell the story.

Phase 5: Fun and Celebrations

Research the holidays and food of this country.  Can you plan a menu for a traditional meal?

What would you serve? What ingredients do you need?

If possible make the dish at home or with classmates.

Phase 6: Pen pal

If possible with the help of your school find a Pen Pal from your country that you can exchange emails or letters with.

Phase 7: Make a friend

If possible with the help of your school find someone in your community originally from this country who can come and talk with you about their customs and history.
