Kindergarten students went to the STEM Lab today to explore wood. The used their four senses of sight, touch, smell and hearing, to compare two different wood samples.

Kindergarten STEM Special
Our Discovery kindergarten students had their first STEM Special in an outdoor classroom. Students learned about deciduous and coniferous trees and explored the properties of wood. Our school nurse, Mr. Cushing added amazing samples of hard woods from his workshop. Next week we will go on a field trip on school grounds to identify trees by by inspecting the bark and leaves.
Space Landing in the Cafe?
The kids in Aftercare got an out of this world surprise today. West Hartford Children’s Museum came to visit with their portable planetarium. The kids loved learning about our solar system.
Rocking it in PreK
The PreK students worked on describing and sorting rocks today. They started with two categories and more categories will be introduced later.
I Can “See” You
Fifth graders are studying the senses and how the lens functions in the eye. Today, they dissected a cow eye and explored the parts of an eye with microscopes.
Braving a New Food Frontier
Students in 2nd grade are learning about Science in their Shopping Cart and looking for ways to add more vegetables and fruit in their diet. Too often we think we don’t like something but have never been brave enough to try it. Today, every second grader had the chance to try tamarind, pomegranate, sugar cane, cilantro, and bac ha (elephant ear).
While the Kids are Away the Teachers Play
CREC teachers at Discovery are learning about science through exploring phenomena. Using hot wheels tracks they are creating models to help revise and develop a consensus model. 
Proving the Earth Rotates
First graders conducted experiments with light and shadow to prove the earth rotates. The students duplicated their outdoor phenomena with indoor experiments. Science can be so much fun.
The Five Senses
Scientists use their FIVE SENSES – seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling and feeling to teach us about our world. PreK artists at Discovery Academy also use their 5 senses to explore their world. (No tasting though!)
Girls in Aviation
Last Saturday, Discovery girls learned about the STEM in aviation. The made helicopters, parachutes, explored planes and had a blast with science and math. The program was sponsored and run by UTC Engineers and the Society of Woman Engineers.
