ISTE Standards in STEMensions

All of the STEMension projects all hit the Empowered Learner by offering choice. Below is a list of the projects and the possible ISTE Standard that can be addressed within the project.

Future Quest

  • Empowered Learner – students take an active role demonstrating technology competency through incorporating Google Drive, spreadsheets, digital photography and graphic design. 
  • Digital Citizen – they will search the Internet researching their future choices and giving credit for material they incorporate in their projects.
  • Knowledge Constructor – students use a variety of resources using digital tools to produce a creative presentation that they are personally connected to.
  • Innovative Designer – students will use digital tools to create a creative presentation incorporating photography and graphic design
  • Computational Thinker – students will use electronic spreadsheets to compute the financial results of their future choices. Students complete an interest profine to calculate the probability of different careers matching their interest.
  • Creative Communicator – students will present this current and future life digitally through art, photography and graphics.
  • Global Collaborator – students complete Interest profiles online and reach out to professionals in their field. They will conduct interviews through email, blogging, forms, phone calls or person to person meetings.

Dream Bedroom

  • Knowledge Constructor – students use a variety of resources using digital tools to produce a bedroom design that they are personally connected to.
  • Innovative Designer – students will use digital tools to create a creative presentation incorporating models, drawings, and graphic design
  • Creative Communicator – students will present the final project through class presentations incorporating the technology of their choice.
  • Global Collaborator – students research and interview people in their life to discover what they consider to be the most essential elements in a bedroom.

Green School

  • Empowered Learner – students take an active role demonstrating technology competency through incorporating Google Drive and graphic design to create a school of the future. They take on different roles as they make decisions about how to address environmental concerns.
  • Digital Citizen – they will search the Internet researching the past and current schools. They give credit for material they incorporate in their projects.
  • Knowledge Constructor – students use a variety of resources using digital tools to produce a creative presentation that they are personally connected to.
  • Innovative Designer – students will use digital tools to create a creative presentation incorporating, models, drawings, and graphic design
  • Creative Communicator – students will present their future green school digitally through art, photography and graphics.
  • Global Collaborator – students research and interview people in their life to discover what their school was like when they grew up.

Future Playground

  • Empowered Learner – Students work in a team to explore playgrounds the past, the most popular equipment, cost of equipment. They research foreign playgrounds and adaptations for students with special needs. Students take an active role demonstrating technology competency through incorporating Tinker CAD, Google Drive, spreadsheets, digital photography and graphic design.
  • Digital Citizen – they will search the Internet researching all aspects of playgrounds. They use the Internet responsibly and give credit for material they incorporate in their projects.
  • Knowledge Constructor – students use a variety of resources using digital tools to produce a final project that they are personally connected to.
  • Innovative Designer – students will use digital tools to create a creative presentation incorporating, models, drawings, and graphic design
  • Computational Thinker – Students develop and employ strategies for gathering cost data to complete budgets. They utilize Tinker CAD to create a digital model of their playground. understanding and solving problems in ways that leverage the power of technological methods to develop and test solutions
  • Creative Communicator – students will present the future playground digitally through art, photography and graphics.
  • Global Collaborator – students research and interview people students and adults with special needs to see how playgrounds help or hinder them.

Dream House

  • Knowledge Constructor – students use a variety of resources using digital tools to produce a dream house design that they are personally connected to.
  • Innovative Designer – students will use digital tools to create a creative presentation incorporating models, drawings, and graphic design
  • Creative Communicator – students will present the final project through class presentations incorporating the technology of their choice.
  • Global Collaborator – students research and interview people in their life to discover what their house was like when they grew up. Students interview trades people to understand the construction, plumbing, electrical, architectural, and design decisions that are made in building a house.

ISTE 1 Creativity and Innovation

  • The use of technology and website publishing in this project motivated the students to write and locate related graphics for their classroom presentations and web pages. Students kept tight deadlines in their stories and immediately looked for their next story.

ISTE 2 Communication and Collaboration

  • This project used technology as a collaboration tool. Students learned how to critique one another’s work and come together in a cohesive group. They were working in real time with a live race and had to work quickly before their news became old news. their crew and edited and revised teammates work. Each newscast was better than the last and the website showed the improved quality of each sto
  • Through the use of shared Google Docs and slides students worked collaboratively with their crew and edited and revised teammates work. Each newscast was better than the last and the website showed the improved quality of each story.
  • Students created bulletin boards, websites and presentations. They presented to different grade levels, peers, parents and administrators.  

ISTE 3 Research and Information Fluency

  • Students used the internet to research stories, Google Docs and Google Drive to collaborate, compose and edit stories, and classroom computers to produce news stories.
  • The latitude and longitude coordinates and weather data was tracked and recorded. A large classroom map was used to plot the data collected throughout the race.
  • Students used computer technology to track, research, and publish newscasts and websites.

ISTE 4 Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Decision Making

  • Students used the Internet to research sailors and boat stories. An engineering problem lead students to tech sites for research.  Learning about the cultural background of a particular sailor lead to international research.

ISTE 5 Digital Citizenship

  • Students referenced sources and evaluated the accuracy of sites.
  • Students practiced responsible internet use and stayed within assigned topics and websites.

ISTE 6 Technology Operations and Concepts

  • Newscasts allowed students to explore different media sources and presentations options. Peer to peer learning allowed students to go beyond the instructor.
