5E Engineering Club: Geeking Out

Discovery Academy Families,

This past Monday, students in the 5-E Engineering Club descended upon the Colt Building to work with a new technology.  The tool in question is the Drawdio.  To make life simple, the Drawdio is a circuit board that connects to a speaker.  When you complete the circuit, it makes a squealing noise through the speaker.  While it is a simple tool, it’s a practical way to test whether or not you have a completed and closed circuit.  The students had a great time exploring and testing out different ways to make circuits.  Below are some pictures of our work and one of my favorite videos ever.

STEM Night Update

Dear Parents and Families,

STEM Night is fast approaching and we would love some help from you.  Our theme is STEM Night: It’s What YOU Make! In that vein, we need some supplies to help “make” things on Wednesday, November 5th.

Below is a list of supplies that we are collecting.

  • Cardboard cereal and tissue boxes.
  • Junk or unwanted electronics
  •  Paper towel rolls
  • Plastic bottles (2 liter washed)
  • Cereal boxes/tissue boxes
  • Milk cartons (1/2 gallon/gallon washed)

If you have any that you can send in with your student(s), it would be greatly appreciated.  I will be compiling a list of “things I still need to get” this weekend so if you could have them sent in by Friday, it helps me plan for next week.  Thank you so much.  We can’t wait to see what you make!

Just to get your interest up below is the list of activities we’re planning for each grade level at STEM Night:

PreK – Nature Collages:  Use nature to make beautiful artwork.
Kindergarten – Weather Instruments: Be your own meteorologist.
First Grade – Shadow Puppets:  It’s storytelling and science all in one.
Second Grade – Invention Convention Take-Apart: The anti-making activity.
Third Grade – Recycled Materials Challenge: How many ways can we reuse common materials?

Have a great week

STEM Night Reminder

Parents,

I wanted to update you on our STEM Night coming up on Wednesday, November 5th.

We will have all families visit the Franklin Ave. location. Each grade will have different activities at their own rooms with a few minor exceptions.  PreK will hold their activities in a few of the rooms not being utilized by other teachers.  Don’t worry, we will have a map for you when you arrive.

The schedule will be as follows:

Families with last names: G-P are invited from 5:00 – 5:30
Families with last names: Q-Z are invited from 5:45 – 6:15
Families with last names: A-F are invited from 6:30 – 7:00

We have many engaging activities planned and look forward to seeing you all on the 5th.

A New Focus for our Fundraiser: WE NEED YOUR HELP

Discovery Academy Families,

As a family, Discovery Academy is here not only to educate children, but to help take care of each and every one of our family members in times of need. Now is such a time for one of our families at Discovery. With a third grade student at Discovery Academy, the Reyes family has been a part of our community since we started back in 2011. Recently, the Reyes family suffered a loss of one of their family members and are in need of our support both emotionally and financially.

True to our mission, we have decided to donate profits from the light bulb drive fundraiser to the Reyes family to help them through this difficult time. We hope that you will join us in supporting them through the purchase of some light bulbs. For every purchase, we will be able to donate 50% of the cost directly to the Reyes family. If you would like to skip the fundraiser and help by offering a donation directly, we welcome that as well.

If you have any questions or would like to know how you can help further, you can contact Kate McGibbon kmcgibbon@crec.org or Tom Reed-Swale treedswale@crec.org or by phone at 860-296-2090.

Thank you,
Mr. Reed-Swale

Cloud Gazing

Did you ever take time as a kid (or even as an adult) and lay down in a field to watch the clouds float on by?  Well our students in Kindergarten were cloud gazing, but they were engaging their science brains as they looked up at the sky.  Below you will see some pictures from their work this week.  Say hello to the future meteorologists of Discovery Academy.

Light Bulb Fundraiser

Families,

I wanted to let you know a little more about our light bulb fundraiser through Shining Solutions.  This program is funded by CL&P and UI through a tiny little charge on every electric bill.  Because it is subsidized by the power companies, we are able to offer bulb packages as less than it would cost at the store.

The goal of our program is not to have you become a light bulb sales force.  Instead, we wanted to use it as a way to offer families a less expensive way to make the switch to energy efficient light bulbs.  If you and your family would like to purchase a package of bulbs through the fundraiser for your own personal use or for a grandparent, that’s great.  We don’t want families and students trying to sell bulbs to neighbors and friends.  The benefit of the program is that the school gets half the money that is spent on the bulbs and if you buy one package, your student will receive the LED night light.

Please do not feel obligated to buy anything or spend any money on these bulbs if it is not the right choice for your family.

If you have any questions, you can contact me at treedswale@crec.org

5-E Engineering Club’s First Meeting

On Monday, 23 third graders and I met at the Colt Building to begin our work in the 5-E Engineering Club.  We had a great time trying out circuits and working to make a light bulb turn on.  Students began experimenting with the ideas of an open and closed circuit.  By the end of our time, students were able to record a diagram of several working models of a closed circuit.  Below are some pictures from our first meeting.
