Today after school we will celebrate another successful year of the Discovery Academy Garden Committee with our annual Garden Party. Thank you to everyone who devoted their time to this unique aspect of our school learning environment. Please let me know if you want to join next year. Our fourteen friend have gotten so big they flew the coop. The life cycle of a chicken is very fast. It only takes 3 months to become a full grown adult!
CREC Discovery Academy 4th and 5th Grade girls will have lunch this Friday with two engineers from the Women in Engineering organization. I met Carolyn Begnoche at the UTC STEM Field Day and was so impressed with her devotion to STEM and inspiring young girls. The Engineers will be hanging out during the 4th and 5th lunch wave from 11:45 to 12:45 in the Design Lab with Mrs. Neseralla and Miss Bruch.
If you are on the 2nd floor today you will hear peeping and find 14 bundles of cuteness outside the first grade classrooms.
We have been watching all day and two more chicks hatched. Overnight, we will find out how many more will break through their egg shell. Some eggs show that the chicks reached the air pocket in the shell and made a small hole in the shell. They must use their own strength to break open their shell. They only have 24 hours because once the membrane lining of the shell dries and hardens they won’t be able to break out.
First grade chicks have begun hatching! They will stay in the incubator until all chicks have hatched. We will keep you posted on our new feathered friends.
Our Kindergarten students are studying animals two by two. They compared earth worms and red worms and conducted experiments. Tomorrow, they will start studying fish and make observations on the similarities and difference in two species.
More butterflies were released this week in the bioswale by Miss Rockwood’s class.
I found 5th graders planting their last seeds in Discovery Academy’s garden. Next year they will be off to middle school. Our memories of this great class will continue as well as the wonderful vegetables they planted today.
