Scientists in first grade started their STEM Light and Shadow Special today and tested different materials to determine if they were opaque, translucent or transparent. Many students could predict the test results but they made eye scopes to prove their predictions.
Kindergarten students went to the STEM Lab today to explore wood. The used their four senses of sight, touch, smell and hearing, to compare two different wood samples.
Our Discovery kindergarten students had their first STEM Special in an outdoor classroom. Students learned about deciduous and coniferous trees and explored the properties of wood. Our school nurse, Mr. Cushing added amazing samples of hard woods from his workshop. Next week we will go on a field trip on school grounds to identify trees by by inspecting the bark and leaves.
Channel 8 did a great story about our 5th graders and the Future Quest. This project connected to all the ISTE Standards. Check out this LINK.
Students will take inventory of their current life and map out where their future will lead. This integrated project Incorporates all of the ISTE Standards newly adopted by the State of Connecticut.
Future Quest brings technology, math, writing, and research together in a highly motivational project. The final presentations will be presentation in Google Drive that has graphics, content and programmed navigation. The project involves digital photography to create B&W, Selfies, Still Lifes and Abstracts to represent the student’s school, home, transportation and chores/responsibilities. Students took an Interest Inventory that guided them toward career choices and then interview a professional in their field

First graders learned how to tell time with the sun during their STEM Special today. They all made sundials and drew scientific models. Some students told the time with the sun clock at recess.
